The Cutlery Show
There is nothing more common as the cutlery we use every day: forks, spoons and knifes. A number of designers and artists give new life, new beauty and even new meaning to these simple extensions of our limbs.
This edition of “the cutlery show” will show cutlery to eat with, projects of almost usable cutlery as well as pure art, inspired by cutlery.
Octave Vandeweghe (B) makes cutlery out of gemstones with facets. “The combination of a gemstone with facets, a knife and cutlery combines notions like beauty and function: beauty becomes function, and function becomes beauty”, he says.
Maarten Baas (NL) and Koichi Futatsumata (JPN) are the first of the designers whose work is realised for the cutlery collection ‘To eat with’ of valerie_objects. Futatsumata was inspired by his favourite technical pen for the grip of his cutlery and Baas shows sketchy, almost childishly simple cutlery in his own typical style.
About the project “to eat with” for Valerie_objects:
“When I approached the designers, (Jinhyun Jeon (KR/NL), Muller Van Severen (B), Maarten Baas (NL), Studio Simple (B/NL), Koichi Futatsumata (JPN) and Studio Wieki Somers (NL) I knew that they would each use their expertise, background and knowledge to come up with a completely divergent range of results. Some of them had already experimented with cutlery, others had been fascinated by the design for years, while for yet others it was their first foray into designing this modest eating tool. But whatever stage they were at, they all succeeded in delivering a surprise.” says curator Veerle Wenes about her project.
THE CUTLERY SHOW also showed the work of artists D.D.Trans, jewelry designer Gésine Hackenberg, metalsmith David Clarke, among other young or well known designers from all over the world, each in their different way, inspired by the theme of cutlery.
