Ilse Van Roy (°1978) is een Belgisch beeldend kunstenaar. In haar praktijk neemt glas een centrale plaats in, naast textiel, fotografie, video en installatie. Vanuit een fascinatie voor de relatie tussen lichaam, beweging en materie onderzoekt ze hoe materiaal, licht en ruimte voortdurend met elkaar in dialoog treden.
Haar glasobjecten balanceren tussen kwetsbaarheid en kracht. Door hun precieze constructie lijken ze een ingehouden beweging in zich te dragen, waardoor transparantie, vorm en materiële aanwezigheid zich voortdurend tot elkaar verhouden.
"Ilse Van Roy vertrekt van de kruik als een archetypische vorm, een symbool dat door de eeuwen heen verbonden is met bewaren en schenken. In haar transparante en gelaagde glasobjecten resoneert een gevoeligheid die herinnert aan de spirituele dimensie van het stilleven, maar ook aan de materiële poëzie van de Arte Povera-beweging. Zoals bij Lucio Fontana en Fausto Melotti wordt het materiaal bij haar niet enkel een drager, maar ook energie: licht, huid en ruimte vloeien samen."

Haar werk beweegt zich op het spanningsveld tussen het tijdelijke en het blijvende.
Ambachtelijke technieken en experiment vormen de basis van een praktijk waarin het maakproces even belangrijk is als het uiteindelijke werk. De beweging van het lichaam, de sporen van creatie en de intrinsieke eigenschappen van het materiaal komen samen in sculpturen die de intensiteit van een langdurig proces tastbaar maken. De herinnering aan het gebaar, het ritme en het verstrijken van de tijd zijn voelbaar aanwezig in haar werk. In samenwerking met dansers en performers verkent Van Roy ook hoe beweging, herhaling en bewuste handelingen zich verankeren in het lichamelijk geheugen.

Ilse Van Roy (b. 1978) is a Belgian visual artist. Glass plays a central role in her practice, alongside textiles, photography, video and installation. Driven by a fascination with the relationship between the body, movement and matter, she explores how material, light and space are in constant dialogue with one another.
Her glass objects strike a balance between fragility and strength. Thanks to their precise construction, they seem to contain a restrained movement, causing transparency, form and material presence to constantly relate to one another.
"Ilse Van Roy takes the jug as her starting point – an archetypal form, a symbol that has been associated with preservation and sharing throughout the centuries. Her transparent, layered glass objects resonate with a sensitivity that recalls the spiritual dimension of the still life, but also the material poetry of the Arte Povera movement. As with Lucio Fontana and Fausto Melotti, the material in her work becomes not merely a medium, but also a source of energy: light, skin and space merge."

Her work navigates the tension between the transient and the enduring.
Traditional craft techniques and experimentation form the basis of a practice in which the creative process is just as important as the final work. The movement of the body, the traces of creation and the intrinsic properties of the material come together in sculptures that make the intensity of a long-term process tangible. The memory of the gesture, the rhythm and the passing of time are palpably present in her work. In collaboration with dancers and performers, Van Roy also explores how movement, repetition and conscious actions become embedded in bodily memory.
