“Voorloper van de vernieuwing van keramiek in de hedendaagse kunst, de kunstenaar Johan Creten (geboren in 1963), gevestigd in Parijs, werkt al bijna veertig jaar op rondreizende basis, van Mexico tot Rome, van Miami tot Den Haag.
Met zijn vernieuwende gebruik van keramiek begon hij eind jaren tachtig met klei te werken, toen het medium nog als taboe werd beschouwd in de hedendaagse kunstwereld. Beroemd om zijn allegorische sculpturen van keramiek en brons, streeft Johan Creten sinds de jaren negentig naar zijn voorstellingen van een wereld vol poëzie, lyriek en mysterie. Ze onderstrepen het belang van schoonheid in zijn werk, terwijl ze het humanistische bewustzijn en de sociale en politieke weerklank van zijn praktijk herbevestigt. In zijn creatieve proces roept Johan Creten op tot “langzame kunst” en hij benadrukt de behoefte aan een terugkeer naar introspectie en verkenning van de wereld met zijn individuele en maatschappelijke kwellingen.

A pioneer of the renewal of ceramics in contemporary art, artist Johan Creten (born in 1963), based in Paris, has been working on a travelling basis for almost forty years, from Mexico to Rome, from Miami to The Hague.
With his innovative use of ceramics, he began working with clay in the late 1980s, when the medium was still considered taboo in the contemporary art world. Famous for his allegorical sculptures in ceramics and bronze, Johan Creten has been pursuing his representations of a world full of poetry, lyricism and mystery since the 1990s. They underline the importance of beauty in his work, while reaffirming the humanistic consciousness and social and political resonance of his practice. In his creative process, Johan Creten calls for “slow art” and emphasises the need for a return to introspection and exploration of the world with its individual and social torments.
