Le Quotidien
A daily newspaper, such as 'Le Quotidien de Paris', is called 'un Quotidien' in French. But 'Le Quotidien' also means: everyday life.
With this pun on the double meaning of 'Le Quotidien', the exhibition aims to bring together two very different worlds. On the one hand the ordinary daily life of everyone, in this case artists and designers. And on the other hand, the newspapers (or modern media) that we open every day to learn about what has happened in the world.
At the breakfast table, on the train or tram, the world of the newspaper (tablet, telephone or computer) collides with everyday life. The breakfast table full of breadcrumbs, jam stains and empty coffee cups is flooded by the war and peace, domestic and foreign policy, economic prosperity and poverty, culture and sports, with which the newspapers fill their pages. It is a world that is familiar to us (as newspaper readers and media viewers) but which we rarely meet in our real world: 'Les quotidiens' conjure up a world that is not part of 'la vie quotidienne'.
Artists and designers, consciously or unconsciously, allow themselves to be influenced by the environment in which they find themselves and by the daily stream of news coming toward us.
valerie_traan brings together a number of artists and designers from various visual disciplines, who cast their empathic gaze on everyday life. In the 'Le Quotidien’-exhibition they talk about current themes, or about what touched them at a certain moment in the news. The viewer looks along with the artist's critical gaze at his - or hers - social engagement or non-engagement, as the case may be.
Le Quotidien
Een dagelijks verschijnende krant, zoals eertijds ‘Le Quotidien de Paris’, wordt in het Frans ‘un Quotidien’ genoemd. Maar ‘Le Quotidien’ betekent ook: het dagdagelijkse leven.
Met de woordspeling op de dubbele betekenis van ‘Le Quotidien’ wil deze tentoonstelling twee héél verschillende werelden bij mekaar brengen. Aan de ene kant het doodgewone dagelijkse leven van iedereen, in dit geval kunstenaars en designers. En aan de andere kant de kranten (of moderne media) die men openslaat om zich te vergewissen van wat er die dag in de wereld gebeurd is.
Aan de ontbijttafel, in de trein of tram botsen deze twee met mekaar: de wereld van de krant (tablet, telefoon of computer) met het leven van alledag. De ontbijttafel vol broodkruimels, confituurvlekken en lege koffiekopjes wordt overspoeld door oorlog en vrede, binnen- en buitenlandse politiek, economische welvaart en armoede, cultuur en sport, waarmee de kranten hun pagina’s vullen. Het is een wereld die ons vertrouwd is (als krantenlezers en mediakijkers) maar die wij eigenlijk hoogst zelden in onze reële leefwereld ontmoeten: ’Les quotidiens’ toveren ons een wereld voor die geen deel uitmaakt van ‘la vie quotidienne’.
Ook kunstenaars en designers laten zich, bewust of onbewust, beïnvloeden door de omgeving waarin ze zich bevinden en door die dagdagelijkse op ons afkomende nieuwsstroom.
valerie_traan brengt, vanuit verschillende beeldende disciplines, een aantal kunstenaars en designers samen, die hun empathische blik op het alledaagse weergeven.
In de tentoonstelling ‘Le Quotidien’ spreken zij over actuele thema’s, of over wat hen op een dag in het nieuws beroerde. De toeschouwer kijkt mee met de kritische blik van de kunstenaar, naar zijn - al dan niet - maatschappelijk engagement.
