Based in Antwerp, DO is a stone cutting atelier founded by Dana Seachuga and Octave Vandeweghe in 2018. Driven by their affection for stone cutting, they research the material and cultural role of (gem)stones within the realm of functional objects. Using basic interventions, shapes and aesthetics, they search for the fundamental action to give a rock an archetypical feature.

DO’s work is routed in extraction of (stone-)segments and function. Basic techniques such as drilling and slicing are applied to create rudimentary features in the rocks. ‘Prompting’ a function to grow from within, instead of being forcibly shaped from without. As a result, the realm of domestic objects steadily transforms and evolves as a still life of tangible ‘fossilized’ ideas. The crafted shapes stand in stark contrast to the organic forms found in nature, revealing the opulence that emerges from seemingly lifeless substance.
