_Geboren 1972, Luxemburg

Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium
Tina Gillen has been working as a painter since the late 1990s and has developed a practice in which figuration and abstraction subtly blend into one another. Her work explores the tensions between two-dimensionality and spatial experience, and examines how images from current events, daily life, or personal memories circulate and gain meaning. Themes such as architecture, landscape, interiority, and contemplation serve as recurring anchor points. Gillen approaches painting as a space for thought, in which the relationship between interior and exterior, between the self and the world, is repeatedly questioned.
She has presented solo exhibitions at a number of venues, including BOZAR, Brussels (2015); Mudam Luxembourg (2012); and M-Museum Leuven (2010), and her work was for the Luxembourg Pavillion at the Venice Biennale (2022). She teaches painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.
