Architecture firm studio MOTO launches modular furniture system STACK
The architectural firm studio MOTO launches STACK: a modular system with which aluminium cabinets, shelves, totems, side and coffee tables can be assembled.
STACK, the first furniture collection by Ghent-based architecture firm studio MOTO, can be seen as a playful family of stackable furniture, constructed from a limited number of aluminium components.
The system allows everyone to compose and 'build' a piece of furniture that meets their specific needs and wishes. Simple, effective, stable, stackable and expandable. Two round aluminium plates make a handy coffee table, but when you place six of them on top of each other, you suddenly get a sculptural totem that can be used as a pedestal or presentation furniture.
As in their architectural practice, studio MOTO's design for STACK seeks the tension between the functional and the adventurous. The collection starts from an everyday reality, but at the same time shows great design pleasure.
For both aesthetic and practical reasons, studio MOTO chose the neutral and timeless aluminium as its material. Apart from the interesting play of light and reflection and the natural patina the material acquires through use, aluminium is also light, strong and pliable. Specific to the collection is the duality between playful and austere, between elegant and robust, between everyday and adventurous and between timeless and contemporary.
The system arose from a practical necessity rather than from the desire to make a grand design statement. When studio MOTO searched in vain for a filing cabinet with a timeless design for their own office that could adapt to changing situations and grow with the office and its archive, they designed a system themselves.
STACK is a system that is clicked together and requires no screws or other mechanical fixings. The result is an extremely simple but versatile, durable and flexible furniture system that offers countless combinations and possibilities.
studio MOTO was founded by Thomas Hick and Mo Vandenberghe. They designed, among other things, The Wunderkammer Residence for Museum Dhondt Dhaenens in Deurle, the mirrored chip shops in Brussels, the redevelopment of the botanical garden in Meise and the new Westerpunt observation tower in De Panne. They are currently working, among other things, on the new master plan and scenography for the Middelheim open-air museum in Antwerp.

Het architectenbureau studio MOTO lanceert STACK: een modulair systeem waarmee aluminium kasten, rekken, totems, bijzet- en salontafels samengesteld kunnen worden.
STACK, de eerste meubelcollectie van het Gentse architectenbureau studio MOTO, kan beschouwd worden als een speelse familie van stapelbare meubels, opgebouwd uit een beperkt aantal aluminium onderdelen.
Het systeem laat toe dat iedereen zelf een meubel kan samenstellen en ‘bouwen’ dat aan zijn/haar specifieke wensen en noden voldoet. Eenvoudig, effectief, stabiel, stapelbaar en uitbreidbaar. Twee ronde aluminium platen maken een handig salontafeltje, maar wanneer je er zes op elkaar plaatst, krijg je plots een sculpturale totem die als sokkel of presentatiemeubel gebruikt kan worden.
Net als in hun architecturale praktijk, zoekt studio MOTO met hun ontwerp voor STACK de spanning op tussen het functionele en het avontuurlijke. De collectie vertrekt vanuit een dagelijkse realiteit, maar geeft tegelijk blijk van een groot ontwerp-plezier.
studio MOTO koos zowel uit esthetische als praktische overwegingen voor het neutrale en tijdloze aluminium als materiaal. Naast het interessante spel van licht en weerspiegeling en de natuurlijk patine die het materiaal door het gebruik krijgt, is aluminium ook licht, sterk en plooibaar. Eigen aan de collectie is de dualiteit tussen speels en strak, tussen elegant en robuust, tussen alledaags en avontuurlijk en tussen tijdloos en eigentijds.
Het systeem ontstond eerder vanuit een praktische noodzaak, dan vanuit de wil om een groots design-statement te maken. Toen studio MOTO voor het eigen kantoor vergeefs naar een archiefkast met een tijdloos ontwerp zocht dat zich kon aanpassen aan veranderlijke situaties, kon meegroeien met het bureau en diens archief, tekenden ze zelf een systeem uit.
STACK is een systeem dat in elkaar wordt geklikt en waar geen schroeven of andere mechanische bevestigingen aan te pas komen. Het resultaat is een uiterst eenvoudig maar veelzijdig, duurzaam en flexibel meubelsysteem dat talloze combinaties en mogelijkheden biedt.
studio MOTO, opgericht door Thomas Hick en Mo Vandenberghe, tekende onder meer de The Wunderkammer Residence voor Museum Dhondt Dhaenens in Deurle, de spiegelende frietkoten in Brussel, de heraanleg van de plantentuin in Meise en de nieuwe Westerpunt-uitkijktoren in De Panne. Momenteel werken ze onder andere aan het nieuwe masterplan en de scenografie voor het Middelheim openluchtmuseum in Antwerpen.
