Er zijn maar weinig kunstenaars met een oeuvre dat zo consistent is als dat van Paul Gees. Sinds begin jaren 80 onderzoeken zijn sculpturen één thema: spanning.
Gees staat bekend om zijn sculpturen waarin hij staal, hout en steen in een wankele balans combineert. Zelf noemt hij Richard Serra en Carl André als grote voorbeelden, maar Gees heeft in feite een geheel eigen wereld gecreëerd. Zijn favoriete materialen worden herhaaldelijk geconfronteerd met primaire krachten. Dit zorgt voor een constante spanning in zijn werk waarin vooral hout veel lijdt, zoals steen het afsplitst, staal het uitrekt of blootstelt aan de elementen. Primaire elementen en natuurlijke krachten heersen in het universum van Paul Gees.

There are very few artists who have an oeuvre as consistent as that of Paul Gees. Since the early ’80s, his sculptures explore a single theme: tension.
Gees is known for his sculptures in which he combines steel, wood and stone in a shaky balance. He himself names Richard Serra and Carl André as great examples, but Gees has in fact created a world all his own. His favourite materials are repeatedly confronted with primary forces. This creates a constant tension in his work in which especially wood suffers a great deal, as stone cleaves it, steel stretches it or exposes it to the elements. Primary elements and natural forces reign in Paul Gees’ universe.

Op 12 december werd kunstenaar Paul Gees 70 jaar en blikt terug op een artistieke praktijk van 50 jaar.
In galerie valerie_traan presenteert hij een selectie van zorgvuldig gekozen kunstwerken, die een overzicht geven van de diversiteit van zijn hele oeuvre.
Tegelijkertijd verschijnt er een gedetailleerd boek (Paul Gees – tension, balance, risk, stability) met een uitgebreid interview, teksten en afbeeldingen. Het boek biedt een overzicht van de prestaties van de afgelopen vijf decennia en de evolutie in het werk van Paul Gees: van zijn performances in de jaren 70 en de vroegste architectonische verkenningen tot zijn tekeningen, sculpturen en meest recente kunstwerken in openbare ruimtes.
